Day Trips from Chianti: Tuscany at Your Doorstep
Talciona sits at the geographical heart of Tuscany. Every morning you can choose a different direction and reach a UNESCO World Heritage site, a medieval hilltop town, a world-class museum, or a vineyard producing some of Italy's finest wine. Return each evening to your private hilltop retreat.
Siena: Frozen in the 13th Century
Siena is one of Italy's best-preserved medieval cities. The Piazza del Campo, shaped like a giant shell, is one of Europe's finest public spaces. The Duomo is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Every August, the Palio horse race fills the square with medieval pageantry. Siena rewards slow exploration: get lost in the narrow lanes and discover small churches, local wine bars, and bakeries selling ricciarelli.
Florence: Art, History and the World's Best Gelato
Florence is one of the world's great cities, and from Talciona it is less than an hour away. The Uffizi Gallery houses Botticelli's Birth of Venus and thousands of other masterpieces. The Duomo dome by Brunelleschi is an engineering marvel you can climb for free. Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Pitti, and the Accademia with Michelangelo's David are all within walking distance of each other. Book museum tickets in advance.
San Gimignano: The Town of Towers
San Gimignano is the closest major attraction to Talciona, just 20 minutes by car. Its famous medieval towers rise dramatically above the Val d'Elsa valley. The town is known for its Vernaccia white wine, its saffron production, and its award-winning gelato. Come in the early morning or evening to beat the summer crowds.
Volterra: Ancient Walls, Alabaster and Silence
Volterra is one of Tuscany's best-kept secrets. Perched dramatically on a hill between the Era and Cecina valleys, it is surrounded by double walls: one Etruscan, one medieval. The town has been a centre of alabaster craftsmanship for centuries. Its artisan workshops produce sculptures, jewellery, and decorative objects you will not find anywhere else. Far quieter than Siena or Florence, Volterra rewards those who seek the road less travelled.
Pisa: More Than a Leaning Tower
Most visitors see only the Leaning Tower, but Pisa deserves more time. The Campo dei Miracoli is one of Italy's most perfect architectural compositions, with the Cathedral, Baptistery and Camposanto forming a harmonious ensemble on a carpet of green. The city itself has a lively university atmosphere, a river walk along the Arno, and excellent seafood restaurants. Note that Pisa International Airport is 90km from Talciona, approximately 1 hour 30 minutes by car.
The Strozzavolpe Castle: Visible from the Garden
From the Talciona garden, the towers of the Strozzavolpe Castle rise against the Tuscan sky. It is the most important and best-preserved of the minor fortresses that once surrounded the town of Poggibonsi, and it can be visited on foot in just a few minutes. History literally surrounds you at Talciona.
Tuscany Wine Tours from Your Chianti Base
The Chianti wine region is literally your backyard at Talciona. Hundreds of estates produce Chianti Classico, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, and Brunello di Montalcino within easy reach. Organise a guided wine tour, visit cellars and vineyards, and bring bottles home for evenings around the fire. We can recommend local guides who speak English.
